Marks & Spencer (M&S, London / UK; www.marksandspencer.com) claims to be the first retailer to convert its range of 25cl still wine bottles to PET – saving 525 t of packaging annually. The PET bottles offer an 88% weight saving over glass.
In the past, PET bottles were used in catering areas with a very fast turnover of stock. Now, oxygen barrier technology has made it possible to achieve a significantly longer shelf life for the bottled wine. The new bottles, which were developed over a period of two years, are guaranteed to keep the wine for at least 12 months. The M&S range includes 19 varieties of red, white and rose wine.
Belinda Kleinig, M&S winemaker, said: “This is really exciting for M&S as it means our customers can enjoy the same great quality wine but in much lighter bottles, which is not only easier for them to carry, but better for the environment.”
