AUTOMOTIVE GLAZING
PC windows reduce Mégane weight by 5.7kg
A special edition of the Renault Mégane R26 will be around 5.7 kg lighter thanks to the substitution of the rear glass windows with polycarbonate. Both the backlight and the two fixed rear side windows are made of PC.

The PC windows are manufactured by French converter Plastrance (Brunstatt; www.plastrance.com), a specialist in the moulding of polycarbonate sheet under the "Clearguard" brand name. The windows are injection compression-moulded using technology developed by Exatec (Europe: Bergisch-Gladbach / Germany; www.exatec.de). The base material is "Lexan", supplied by Sabic Innovative Plastics (SIP, Bergen op Zoom / The Netherlands; www.sabic-ip.com), which is subsequently coated with the silicon hardcoat "AS 4000" from Momentive Performance Materials (Albany, New York / USA; www.momentive.com), dispensing with the additional plasma coating.
For the first time, Plastrance has used Exatec's proprietary "Blackout" technology in production-line manufacture. The system involves colouring the edges of the windows black in order to protect the adhesive used to secure the windows from UV radiation.
