Epo purchase strengthens prepregs business
SGL (Wiesbaden / Germany; www.sglcarbon.com) is purchasing carbon fibre composites manufacturer Epo (Willich / Germany; www.epo-gmbh.de). The acquisition, which is subject to antitrust approval, will expand the manufacturing and technological capabilities of SGL’s Carbon Fibers and Composites (CFC) business, says Hariolf Kottmann, SGL management board member.
In particular, Epo will reinforce SGL’s existing investment in a prepreg facility in Meitingen / Germany, as well as its SGL Kümpers joint venture, which was established in January 2007.
With sales of about EUR 20m last year, Epo has a global presence in the unidirectional semi-finished carbon fibre-based products (prepregs) market. SGL plans to boost sales from its CFC business by at least 15% annually until 2011. Sales from the business grew 28% for the first nine months of this year to EUR 123.7m.
