Second phase of restructuring for flexibles / 900 jobs to go / EUR 30m benefits annually
The European flexibles business of Amcor (Abbotsford / Australia; www.amcor.com) is commencing the second phase of its EUR 60m restructuring programme announced earlier this year – see Plasteurope.com of 03.05.2007. Amcor plans to cut 900 jobs from its workforce of 7,600 as it moves production to lower-cost economies in southern and eastern Europe. It currently has 38 plants in 15 countries. Closures will include Amcor Flexibles Venus (Ilkeston / UK), with the loss of an expected 140 jobs. The flexibles plant in Novgorod / Russia has doubled in capacity following the installation of a press relocated from the closed Colodense plant in Bristol / UK, and the new EUR 30m factory in Lodz / Poland, dedicated to snack food packaging for PepsiCo, is expected on stream in May 2008. Speaking at the company’s recent annual general meeting, managing director Ken MacKenzie said the restructuring will deliver benefits of EUR 30m annually.
