Process coats PET bottle interiors with glass / Transparency retained and permeation reduced
SIG Plasmax (Hamburg / Germany), the plasma barrier coating business of packaging group SIG (Neuhausen / Switzerland; www.sig.biz), has developed a process that enables the interior of PET bottles to be coated with a transparent, flexible layer of glass. The company says the barrier stops CO2 and O2 permeation while retaining the high transparency of the PET bottle.

Five "Plasmax" systems are presently in operation across a range of applications. The system has been approved for use with beer by the independent VLB brewery testing and training institute in Berlin / Germany. At Eckes-Granini´s fruit juices plant in Henniez / Switzerland, all fruit juice production for the domestic market has been bottled in Plasmax-coated PET since April 2006. For three years, Hokkai Can and Yoshino have been bottling high quality edible oil in Japan.
SIG Plasmax envisages further applications for the technology including bottling wine, flavoured alcoholic beverages, mixed drinks and ketchup.
