BASF ceasing DEHP production in Europe
BASF (D-67056 Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com) will cease production of the PVC plasticiser DEHP in Europe in the third quarter of 2005. The associated 200,000 t/y EH-2 alcohol production also will close. Facilites for several other plastics additives will be shut at Feluy / Belgium, resulting in the loss of 200 of the 300 jobs there. Around 100 of the workforce will be offered jobs at the Antwerp site. BASF said the DEHP shutdown measure was prompted by a shrinking European market, which has declined by half since 2000. The plant at Feluy additionally is said to have an unfavourable cost structure.
