Bottle recycling tonnage rises 68% in UK in 2007 / 35% of total consumption now recycled
The weight of plastic bottles collected annually for recycling in the UK rose to almost 182,000 t in 2007, a 68% increase on 2006. This is equivalent to 4.5 bn bottles and represents a recycling rate of 35% of total consumption. The recycling rate was 20% in 2006 and just 5.5% in 2003.
These are the key findings from the latest survey of local authorities in the UK. It found that kerbside collection continues to play a major role in increasing recycling rates, with 81% of plastic bottles collected by this method in 2007. The survey says recycling collection rates could increase to 50% in 2008 and 71% in 2009 if past performance is maintained.
The research was funded by WRAP (Banbury / UK; www.wrap.org.uk) and undertaken by Valpak (Stratford-upon-Avon / UK; www.valpak.org) in partnership with Recoup (Woodston, Peterborough / UK; www.recoup.org).
