WORLD PLASTICS COUNCIL
President Benny Mermans elected for second term
— By Plasteurope.com staff —

The executive committee of the World Plastics Council (WPC; Brussels; www.worldplasticscouncil.org) has unanimously re-elected Benny Mermans as its president for another two years. Mermans, vice-president for sustainability at Chevron Phillips, took office on 1 January 2025.

Over the past two years, Mermans has been focused on negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty, whose last meeting was held in Busan, South Korea, unfortunately, without any recognisable result. According to the WPC, his efforts have “strengthened its advocacy for ambitious and elective solutions, calling on negotiators to maintain momentum towards a treaty that reduces plastic pollution while recognising the essential role plastics play in society”.

Founded in 2014 by Plastics Europe (Brussels; www.plasticseurope.org) and the American Chemistry Council (ACC, Washington, DC, USA; www.americanchemistry.com), the WPC includes around 20 plastics manufacturers and several international partners.
