WIENTJES GROUP
SMC for load bearing high performance parts / Innovation in injection moulding for engineering thermoplastics
Wientjes Emmen BV (Phileas Foggstraat, NL-7825 AK Emmen) has developed a new Bisphenol A-based SMC formulation for parts requiring high chemical and thermal resistance, for example as a collection and drainage container for the flue gas and water condensate from heating units. A second application is as a protective coating for sewage treatment plants for brewery and paper factory effluents. The parts must be resistant to the highly corrosive materials, such as sulphuric acid, which are generated by the treatment. In addition the covering will support the weight of a person, which is an advantage for inspection purposes, and the material can withstand temperatures between -40 C and +80 C. A particular highlight in Wientje's product range is flexible SMC, used in the automobile industry for acoustic insulation capsules.

In addition to the manufacture of SMC/GMT materials, Wientjes manufactures a range of injection moulding parts. The most recent development is a supporting element for lorry jacks made from glass-fibre reinforced PA 6, which can replace metal parts. Cooperation with a Dutch development office has produced a compact disc packer, enabling CDs to be packed without human contact, soilage or damage. Only two moulds are needed for the manufacture of the packer which are made up from seven ABS component parts. Wientjes Emmen emphasizes that since February, it is one of the few Dutch suppliers to manufacture parts using gas injection technology.

Wientjes Emmen is part of the Industrial Parts Division of B.E.M. Wientjes Beheer BV (PO Box 107, NL-9300 AC Roden). Wientjes Roden BV (Produktieweg 9, NL-9301 ZS Roden), which specializes in thermoforming techniques for plastic semifinished products is also part of the same division. Without publishing specific figures, Wientjes reports a 50% increase in 1993 turnover in injection moulding and a small percentage rise in the turnover for pressings and stampings, with a "satisfactory" net profit. Six percent growth without acquisitions is projected for the 1994 business year.

The group is completed by Jardin BV (Haansbergsweg, NL-2121 LJ Rijen) which manufactures plastic garden furniture. Bowie BV (Dwazzidweg 15, NL-9301 ZR Roden) manufacture high quality kitchen sinks from "Quaryl", a quarz filled acrylate material. Ucosan BV (Dwazzidweg 13, NL-9301 ZR Roden) manufactures bath- and shower cabinets as well as high-quality tubs. Bowie and Ucosan are both 50/50 joint ventures with Villeroy & Boch AG (PO Box 10120, D-66688 Mettlach).
