WENTWORTH TECHNOLOGIES
Canadian plastics technology group set for expansion / Increased commitment in Poland
Wentworth Technologies Co Ltd. (Mississauga, Ontario/ Canada; www.wentworthmold.com), which was set up as a mould-making company in 1990, recorded sales of CAD 4.8m (approximately EUR 3.5m) in 1995. Just five years later, in 2000, sales had already reached CAD 124m (EUR 90m) – figures that bear witness to the group´s rapid development from a mould builder to a serious international competitor.
The group´s core business consists of the production of moulds and dies that are used to blow mould bottles and containers for the food industry, household goods and hygiene and cosmetic products. Wentworth regards itself as the world market leader for blow moulds for PET bottles and the number two for moulds for PET preforms. In structural terms, the group is not only vertically integrated, building also injection moulds, for example, but has also engaged in forward integration with a move into plastics processing (injection moulding, blow moulding, thermoforming). This has naturally been accompanied by geographical expansion too: the company currently has eight production sites in Canada, the US and Singapore, as well as in Europe, at Wentworth Mould UK Ltd. (9 Middleway, Old Middlelane Industrial Estate, GB-Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire NG19 9BG) and at Wentworth Tech Sp z.o.o. (PL-24320 Poniatowa).
The group´s commitment in Poland – the country of the forefathers of founder and owner Walter T. Kuskowski – started with the acquisition of a Polish mould making company in 1997 and was taken one step further in February 2002 with the purchase of mould makers and injection moulders A. Trzaska Polflansz (PL-85461 Bydgoszcz; www.a.trzaska.com.pl). Shortly after the acquisition, the company was allocated to Canadian thermoforming company Amhil Enterprises that had been purchased in 1999. This was designed to open up the way for Amhil to enter the European thermoforming and injection moulding markets. Further acquisitions and expansion are to be expected in Europe too, with Wentworth intending to double its sales between 2000 and the end of 2003.
