As an alternative to decorative electroplating technology for plastics, Warnecke & Böhm (WB Coatings, Schliersee / Germany; www.wb-coatings.de), which produces paints and coatings, has brought a paint onto the market that gets by without the use of chromium but is very similar in appearance. This has been prompted by the classification of chromium (VI) as carcinogenic and mutagenic, in line with the declaration issued by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA, Helsinki / Finland; www.echa.europa.eu) back in 2013. As of 21 September 2017, the materials concerned may only be used if authorised and licensed.
Tests on this three-layer coating, comprising a primer, base and clear coat, have proved positive with respect to resistance to scratch, saliva and perspiration as well as chemicals and creams, explains WB Coatings. The two-component systems are said to be suitable for application by standard commercial spraying equipment. An additional glazing coating also allows for coloured surface effects.
