Lithuanian recycler invests in big-bag recovery
Recycling firm Virginijus (Plunge, Lithuania; www.virginijusirko.lt/en) said it has invested an undisclosed sum in the construction of a processing plant for “big bags”, i.e. large-volume flexible bulk containers.

The recycling line in Kairiai in northern Lithuania consists of a shredding and washing plant, a process water treatment system, and an extrusion line with odour decontamination. The manufacturer of the systems is Lindner-Recyclingtech (Spittal an der Drau, Austria; www.lindner.com).

Virginijus, which has three domestic branches, has been active in recycling for more than 20 years and by its own account processes around 35,000 t/y of waste, including that from trade and commerce.

The company said waste products from agriculture, including agricultural film and discarded big bags, make up the majority of materials to be recycled.

Its flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) reclaim facility was commissioned in mid-2023 and produces recycled polypropylene (rPP), which in turn can be processed into big bags.

Virginijus said it will recycle up to 2,000 t of plastics waste this year, ultimately planning to up the volume to 8,000 t/y, according to managing director Virginijus Skublickas.
