Boom leads to PVC capacity expansion
The growing demand for plastics has driven Vietnam to accelerate expansion of its PVC capacity. Construction of two new PVC plants is planned. In Ba Ria-VungTau-Province in South Vietnam the construction of a plant for the manufacture of 100,000 t/y of PVC and other chemicals is planned. Oxy-Vina-Joint Venture is a jv between Oxychem Co (USA), the Japanese Marubeni Co, and two Vietnamese companies, Tramatsuco Co and Vietnam Gas Co, with a total investment volume of $ 109m. Plant start up is planned for 1999 and complete operation projected for 2005.
The Japanese Mitsui Corporation is also planning to build PVC capacity, in cooperation with the Thai Plastic and Chemicals Co Ltd (Thailand) and the local companies Ferchemco and Vinaplast. The plant will be sited in Go Dan, Long Thanh District in Dong Nai-Province in South Vietnam. It is planned to start construction at the end of 1995, and completion is projected in the beginning of 1997. Initial production will be 80,000 t/y PVC, of which 7% will be for the home market. Capacity is expected to be doubled after 2005. At present Vietnam has to import about 50,000 t PVC.
