VARTA-PLASTIC
Components: Sale to Schuttersveld NV / Expansion of business in Germany
The secret surrounding the sale of Varta-Plastic GmbH (D-63601 Wächtersbach), a German manufacturer of injection moulded components, has at last been disclosed. The acquisition is being made by the Dutch Schuttersveld Group (HQ: Schuttersveld NV, Utrechtseweg 46, NL-3704 HD Zeist). According to the former parent company Varta AG (Am Leineufer 51, D-30419 Hannover), the Czech subsidiary company Varta-Plastic-Strojplast spol. S.r.o. (VPS, Tachov) is included in the transaction. The company's partner in the Czech Republic is Schoeller Plast Industries GmbH (Zugspitzstr. 15, D-82049 Pullach). From Varta's viewpoint, "the contract partner Schuttersveld guarantees the successful further development of Varta-Plastic". Schuttersveld wants to expand its business operations in Germany.
The Schuttersveld Group, whose parent company is quoted on the Amsterdam stock exchange, has annual sales of approx. DEM 1bn and is one of the biggest European companies in the plastics and metalworking industry (see Plasteurope.com 24, 1997, for details). The plastics segment accounts for around 50% of sales. It was only recently that General Director Jan Bernard Wolters announced further European acquisitions. The numerous takeovers in the recent past led to the formation of a small Group for technical supplier components and business with semi-finished goods. The group includes the firms Backhaus, Richard Heinze, Vink (plastics semi-finished goods) and Binder Magnete. In Poland, Schuttersveld owns the majority shareholding of the plastics converter Bianor Sp.z.o.o. (Ul. Szosa Polnocno-Obwodowa 38, PL-15-113 Bialystok).
Varta-Plastic boosted its sales in 1997 by 79% to DEM 130m, although the operating result was only DEM 2m. In the previous years, the company had been in the red, which is likely to have affected the purchasing price – the price was not officially announced. This means that Schuttersveld probably obtained an interesting subsidiary company at an extremely favourable price, gaining a site with considerable potential for expansion.
