Start: Consumer packaging activities in Turkey / NLG 24m investment
On October 18, 1996, Royal Packaging Industries Van Leer NV (Amsterdamseweg 206, NL-1182 HL Amstelveen) reached agreement with SAF Plastik Sanyi ve Ticaret AS (Atatürk Organize Sanayi Bölgesi, TR-10036 SK No. 9 Cigli-Izmir) with regard to the establishment of a joint venture under the name of Van Leer SAF Plastik Sanayi ve Ticaret AS. Van Leer will hold 60% of the shares representing an investment of NLG 24m which will be paid from cash. The remaining 40% will be held by the Eskinazi family of Izmir, former owners of SAF Plastik. Sales of Van Leer SAF are NLG 50m per annum.
Van Leer SAF will be one of the leading producers of flexibles in the Turkish packaging industry. The company is based in Izmir and has 400 employees. Its main export markets are the former USSR countries and countries in the Middle East. The production programme of Van Leer SAF includes coextruded polyethylene and material combinations for the food industry and for non-food applications like hygiene products, as well as carrier bags.
Van Leer SAF will be part of the Consumer Flexibles Division to ensure a smooth transfer of technology owned by 4P Verpackungen Ronsberg GmbH (Heinrich-Nicolaus-Str. 6, D-87671 Ronsberg). Activities of Van Leer SAF are expected to be expanded with Consumer Flexibles as are currently produced at 4P Ronsberg. 4P Ronsberg is specialized in printed flexible packaging materials for the food and non-food industry. It is the intention to invest promptly in Van Leer SAF in rotogravure technology to serve these markets with high quality printing.
The joint venture will enable Van Leer to strengthen the market position of its Consumer Flexibles Division in Turkey and the Middle East. In taking this step, Van Leer is following the trend among multinational customers to develop a stronger local presence in these countries.
Van Leer is one of the world's leading packaging companies with 140 operating companies in 42 countries. Its industrial product range includes steel, plastic and fibre drums, Intermediate Bulk Containers and closure systems. Its consumer product range comprises printed consumer packaging products such as flexibles; folding cartons and tubs and lids, predominantly used for food packaging; metallized products; moulded fibre products such as Chinet disposable tableware, egg packaging and fruit trays; specialty films and coatings.
