Plastics certification programme extended / RoHS compliant and non-halogenated certification ratings now available
Material safety and specification specialist Underwriters Laboratories (UL, Northbrook, Illinois / USA; www.ul.com) has expanded its plastics certification programme to include optional EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and non-halogenated ratings.
The RoHS compliant certification rating offers a set of certification guidelines based on the new UL 746R “Outline of investigation for restricted use substances in polymeric materials” and the RoHS directives 2002/95/EC and 2011/65/EU, relating to the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, to ensure plastics are below the legal limits for lead, mercury, cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
The non-halogenated certification for plastics programme tests and certifies that materials meet the UL 746H “Outline of investigation for non-halogenated materials” and evaluates materials in two different rating schemes relating to fluorine, chlorine, and bromine content.
