TYRE RECYCLING
Suez and Pyrum sign deal to develop new UK pyrolysis plant
German pyrolysis specialist Pyrum Innovations (Dillingen; www.pyrum.net) has teamed up with French environmental services group Suez (Paris; www.suez.com) to develop and build the UK’s first plant using a new patented pyrolysis technology for recycling end-of-life tyres.
The companies said the facility would be able to recycle 20,000 t of tyres per year, around 4% of all tyres disposed of annually in the UK (Photo: Pyrum) |
Under the terms of the deal, Suez will identify a location for the first plant and secure planning approval, backed by Pyrum. The two firms hope a site will be found within the next 12 months.
Once built, the planned plant will comprise three pyrolysis reactors with a recycling capacity of around 20,000 t of end-of-life tyres per year.

Suez and Pyrum said around 50 mn tyres – or 480,000 t – are disposed of in the UK each year, around a third of which were turned into an alternative fuel. The remaining tyres are either shredded and ground into a new material called crumb, which is used on sports pitches or playgrounds, or sent for energy recovery or to landfill.
