Europe's No. 3 in PVC window profiles / Quality control association set up
In 1997, approximately 104,000 t dryblend materials (PVC + additives) were processed into window profiles in Turkey. This tonnage is expected to increase to 116,000 t in 1998 and to 146,000 t in the year 2000. This has now made Turkey into the third-biggest producer of plastic window profiles in Europe already, according to information from extruder manufacturers, Cincinnati Milacron Austria GmbH (CM, PO Box 111, A-1239 Vienna). Ahead of Turkey come Germany and Great Britain. The reasons given by CM for the increased use of PVC windows is the general growth in the Turkish construction industry and the population increase of 1.5 million each year.
According to Cincinnati Milacron, this prominent position makes Turkey into a key export market for plastics raw material and machinery. The company used this as an opportunity to organise the "1st Turkey Window Profile Extrusion Symposium" in Istanbul at the start of December in cooperation with the Actual company (A-4053 Ansfelden) and Greiner (A-4550 Kremsmünster). The initiators felt they had been particularly successful in gathering almost the entire Turkish window profile industry around the same table. The 100 or so participants resolved to set up a national quality control association. Discussions were held under the heading "The plastic window in present-day building", covering system requirements, design criteria and quality control criteria as well as quality guidelines for plastic windows on the basis of the German AL quality standard.
The preliminary products for window production come primarily from the Petkim company, owned by the Turkish government, and from foreign raw materials producers. The plastics window company Pimas dominated the Turkish window market in 1997 with a production tonnage of 25,000 t, followed by Pakpen with 15,000 t and Egepen and Firatpen with 10,000 t each. Foreign investors and shareholders include Beka, Veka, Internorm, Brügmann, Tissen, Reckendress, Sofrapen, Kömmerling, Rehau and KBE. The future prospects for the PVC window profile sector in Turkey are good, given the high pent-up demand and growing exports. Demand is showing above-average growth in humid areas such as the Black Sea coast and mountainous regions.
