A number of grades of “Magnum” ABS resins from styrenics producer Trinseo (Berwyn, Pennsylvania / USA; www.trinseo.com) are now considered to be FDA food contact compliant. The food contact grades are ABS 3453, 3904 / 3904 smooth and 8391 / 8391 MED resins.
Trinseo said that its FDA compliance is especially important in its medical devices business, where medical customers are likely to prefer food contact compliant materials as a product enhancement beyond the compliance to biocompatibility standards alone.
The resins are produced using a proprietary mass polymerisation process rather than a traditional emulsion process. They feature improved purity, enhanced consistency, high whiteness and colour and general stability, Trinseo said. They have been approved under the FDA’s Conditions of Use E to G, for room temperature to frozen storage.
