TORAY
Producing bio-polyester based on Gevo's renewable isobutanol / Scale-up evaluation and market development
US renewable chemicals company Gevo (Englewood, Colorado; www.gevo.com) has sold first volumes of its renewable bio-paraxylene (bioPX), based on renewable isobutanol, to Toray Industries (Tokyo / Japan; www.toray.com). The shipment was sold as part of an offtake agreement the two companies signed in 2012 – for details, see Plasteurope.com of 02.07.2012. The Japanese group plans to turn the bioPX into PET fibres, yarns and films for scale-up evaluation and market development purposes.
Toray previously helped fund the construction of Gevo’s demonstration plant, where the US group also manufactures hydrocarbon products, such as renewable jet fuel and iso-octane. Aside from the Japanese group, Gevo also enjoys the support of global beverage giant the Coca-Cola Company (Atlanta, Georgia / USA; www.thecoca-colacompany.com), which aided in the bioPX technology development – see Plasteurope.com of 02.09.2013.
