TICONA
POM jv with Polyplastics and Mitsubishi in China approved / Start-up set for 2004
PTM Engineering Plastics, a planned joint venture of Ticona (D-60528 Frankfurt; www.ticona.com), its Japanese affiliate Polyplastics (Tokyo; www.polypla.co.jp) and Japan´s Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company (MGC, Tokyo; www.mgc.co.jp), has won approval from the Department of Foreign Trade and Cooperation of China´s Jiangsu province to build a world-scale, 60,000 t/y plant for polyacetal (POM) resins. (See Plasteurope.com 16, 2001.)
The plant, foreseen to start up in 2004, will be China´s first POM plant and will reduce the country´s dependence on imports. Ticona said the polymer produced will be characterised by high crystallinity, high strength, toughness and lubricity over a broad range of temperatures and chemical environments. It can be processed by “many conventional means,” including injection moulding, extrusion and rotational casting. Polyplastics is a joint venture of Ticona and Japan´s Daicel Chemical Industries (www.daicel.com).
