UK retailer to swap plastic packaging on own-brand pocket tissues
UK supermarket chain Tesco (Welwyn Garden City; www.tesco.com) said it will be replacing plastic packaging on multi-packs of its own-brand pocket tissues with recyclable paper. The retail giant said the move would save more than 55 mn pieces of soft plastic every year, or around 35 t of new soft plastic being created each year.

Tesco campaigns manager, Courtney Pallett, said, “Unlike boxes of tissues, the pocket version tends to be used on the go and can all too easily become litter. The new paper packaging works just as well as the old plastic wrap but is more sustainable.”

The company claims to have removed nearly 2.2 bn pieces of plastic from its UK business, including more than 200 mn bags from the group’s grocery deliveries, in excess of 100 mn extra lids from products such as wipes, creams, yogurts, and desserts, and 75 mn multipacks of tinned groceries that are no longer plastic-wrapped.
