TEIJIN DUPONT FILMS
Enhanced flame-retardant PEN film launched / Sales of EUR 14.6m targeted by March 2017
Teijin DuPont Films – a joint venture between Japan’s Teijin (Tokyo; www.teijin.co.jp/english) and DuPont (Wilmington, Delaware / USA; www.dupont.com) – has developed a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) film with enhanced flame retardance. “Teonex” QF has been approved to meet the plastics flammability safety standard of UL VTM-0, meaning automatic extinction within 10 seconds of ignition.

“Teonex”, which Teijin says offers excellent strength and heat resistance, does not contain halogenated flame retardants, thus eliminating concerns about the effect on the environment and human health. The company said that, until now, PEN films with flame retardance above the VTM-2 rating (automatic extinction within 30 seconds of ignition) incorporated halogenated flame-retardant additives and coatings.

Teijin is targeting sales revenue of YEN 2 bn (EUR 14.6m) for “Teonex” QF by the fiscal year ending in March 2017. Applications include lithium ion batteries, flexible printed circuit board substrates, flat cables, and both lighting and construction architectural materials. Teijin DuPont FIlms operates two production sites in Europe. - in Scotland / UK as well as in Luxembourg.
