South Koreans to start carbon fibre production in March / Plans to become a leading global supplier
In line with earlier plans, in March 2012 fibre and textile specialist Taekwang Industrial (Ulsan / South Korea; http://taekwang.co.kr/english/index.html) started producing carbon fibres, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports. Citing company sources, Yonhap says Taekwang has invested about EUR 100m in R&D and initially plans to produce about 3,000 t/y of PAN and 1,500 t/y of carbon fibres.
Taekwang has been developing its own technologies for the manufacture of PAN precursors and carbon fibres since 2009. The company, which also turns out PTA and acrylonitrile in Ulsan, hopes the new line will allow it to cut down on carbon fibre imports – all in all, South Korea imports about 2,400 t/y of carbon fibre, sourced from Japan or the US. At the same time, the Korean group is planning to raise its international presence and has already touted investments to further raise output.
