To meet the increasing demand for packaging solutions for sterile goods, Germany’s Südpack (Ochsenhausen; www.suedpack.com) has announced plans to increase production at its French facility in Coulmer via its medical technology company Südpack Medica. Details on the investment and planned boost in capacity were not disclosed.

The move will enable Südpack to strengthen its position in the pharmaceutical sector, according to Medica managing director Thomas Freis. The cleanroom production area that complies with ISO 7 standards is to be almost doubled, for example, but again no specific figures were disclosed.

The Coulmer plant produces sterile barrier pouches, including those used for packaging implants, for example. The product portfolio also includes rolled packaging and lid solutions in film, Tyvek brand HDPE spunbond nonwovens, and paper. Header bags will be another focus in future, intended especially for high-volume medical technology products that are generally subjected to ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilisation. Typical uses range from syringe nests and pipette boxes to surgical sets.

Südpack Medica, with its head office in Baar, Switzerland, was founded in 1989. It focuses on developing plastics packaging solutions for sterile goods. The company’s production range includes coextruded flexible and rigid films for use as base and lid films as well as prefabricated pouch solutions. Apart from the Coulmer site, Medica products are manufactured in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Südpack reported sales of EUR 520 mn in 2021 with 1,750 employees at the group’s 10 production sites.
