SULZER CHEMTECH
New PLA demonstration plant in Switzerland
Switzerland’s Sulzer Chemtech (Winterthur; www.sulzer.com) is planning to build its own 1,000 t/y PLA plant to provide test material for its customers. Set to go on stream in early 2012 at an undisclosed location in Switzerland, the facility would also serve as a demonstration plant for Sulzer’s polymerisation technology, developed in cooperation with Purac (Gorinchem / The Netherlands; www.purac.com).

Sulzer says the process based on Purac’s “unique” L- and D-lactides offers improved heat-resistance that allows the end product to be used at temperatures of up to 180°C. Applications for the automotive, electronics and textiles sectors are currently being developed.
In March last year, Synbra Technology (Etten-Leur / The Netherlands; www.synbra.com) started up the first-ever PLA plant to use the new process – see Plasteurope.com of 22.09.2010. The initial capacity of 5,000 t/y is already planned to be expanded.
