Belgian chemicals group Solvay (Brussels; www.solvay.com) plans to expand its Omnix high performance polyamide (HPPA) compound family with its first recyclate-based HPPA. The new Omnix ReCycle grade is based on a minimum of 33% recycled content, consisting of 70% post-industrial or post-consumer recyclate (PIR/PCR), and contains 50% glass fibre reinforcement.
The material saves resources and results in a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to virgin HPPA, showing a 30% lower global warming potential, the company says. It can be processed on standard injection moulding equipment including the use of water heated moulds, Solvay added.
The material demonstrates lower water absorption, improved flowability, and best-in-class surface aspect compared to virgin semi-aromatic HPPA. Its outstanding mechanical properties allow brand owners and manufacturers to increase recycled content in their product without compromising dimensional stability, stiffness, impact resistance, and processability, according to Solvay.
Targeted applications include household appliances, where it provides higher durability than a standard PA 6 or PA 6.6, and can eliminate the need for painting due to good surface appearance. In transportation and automotive applications, the company says the material can offer wear and tear resistance.
