SOLVAY
New process for coloured PVC window profiles
Solvay S.A. (Rue du Prince Albert 33, B-1050 Bruxelles) has developed a completely new method for producing coloured PVC profiles intended for outdoor applications. The compounds are marketed under the “Benvic” brand name, with the product name of “Rainbow”. Coloured PVC profiles have failed in the past on account of high costs and poorer properties by comparison with white profiles or ones coloured brown. Adopting a new approach, a UV-resistant, coloured PVC coating is now coextruded on a standard PVC profile. The coating has a very low infrared absorption value, preventing it from becoming hot. One side-effect is that the base profile no longer needs to be UV stabilised. Comprehensive weathering tests with the new materials have been underway in France, Germany and Brazil since 1993 already. Solvay can now guarantee virtually any colour for PVC profiles. The range is being launched in the standard colours of dark brown, green, blue, yellow, red, orange and violet.
