Irish packaging giant Smurfit Kappa (Dublin; www.smurfitkappa.com) has opened a new "Bag-in-Box" plant in Ibi / Spain to cater to rising regional demand. The company invested about EUR 28m in the facility, which it said will produce millions of taps and bags every month. The site also includes a showroom as well as a training centre.
Smurfit Kappa specialises in paper-based packaging but also uses plastic in its product portfolio, including its Bag-in-Box production, as handles, or as LDPE film and bubble bags. In response to a Plasteurope.com query, a company spokeswoman said the facility in Ibi sources the PE film used for Bag-in-Box from an unnamed external supplier. The company purports to be one of the leading producers of paper-based packaging in the world, with some 41,000 employees spread across 350 sites in 32 different countries. Smurfit Kappa posted sales of EUR 7.9 bn in 2013.
