SMS PLASTICS TECHNOLOGY
Sales down in 2002 / Battenfeld Extrusion affected by construction industry crisis
SMS Plastics Technology (HQ: D-58540 Meinerzhagen; www.sms-k.com) reported a 15% drop in turnover in 2002 against 2001 to EUR 428m. Although the level of incoming orders, at EUR 461m, represents a 2% improvement, expectations for 2003 are subdued. The group´s affiliates are being affected differently by the ongoing economic crisis that has dogged the plastics industry for the past two years.

In 2002, sales of the group´s film technology division, with Battenfeld Gloucester Engineering Co Inc. (Gloucester, Massachusetts / USA), SMS Folientechnik GmbH & Co KG (A-1230 Vienna; www.sms-folien.com) and the recently acquired SMB David GmbH (D-82211 Herrsching), slumped to EUR 112m. This was a 25% drop compared with 2001. Incoming orders were flat at EUR 128m. Battenfeld Gloucester managed to compensate for some of the slack US business with orders from Canada, Latin America and Asia.

In the pipe and profile extrusion sector, Cincinnati Extrusion GmbH (A-1239 Vienna; www.cet-austria.com) held its turnover volume at EUR 74m in 2002. Incoming orders rose by 10% to EUR 77m. One highlight was the success of the company´s new “Alpha” extruder, first introduced to the market at K´2001. The 100th model of this cash & carry standardised machine series was delivered only recently.

Battenfeld Chen Extrusion Systems Ltd. (Shunde / China) saw a sales increase of more than 40% to EUR 9m and has plans for a new facility in the Shunde industrial estate. The majority of incoming orders were related to the construction of a new natural gas pipeline across China, a project that started last year. AmericanMaplan Inc. (McPherson, Kansas / USA) was battered by the weak US market and achieved a turnover of only EUR 17m.

Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik GmbH (D-32547 Bad Oeynhausen; www.bex.battenfeld.com) felt the effects of the economic malaise in Europe. Due to a high dependency on the suffering European construction industry, sales took a nosedive to EUR 55m, a drop of 35%. Incoming orders receded by 19% to EUR 59m. Only the successful spare parts division kept results from looking worse. The company reacted to the downturn by cutting 24 jobs and relocating smaller production sites to Austria.

Battenfeld Injection Molding Technology GmbH (D-58540 Meinerzhagen; www.battenfeld.de) posted sales of EUR 166m in 2002 (EUR 176m in 2001). Incoming orders remained flat at EUR 168m. – see also Plasteurope.com 5, 2003.
