Uhde Inventa-Fischer to build JV plant for PPS production in South Korea
South Korean speciality chemicals producer SK Chemicals (Seoul; www.skchemicals.com) has selected the German-based plant engineering company Uhde Inventa-Fischer (Berlin; www.uhde-inventa-fischer.com) to build the plant at its Ulsan / South Korea location. The plant is a JV with Japanese Teijin Chemicals (Tokyo; www.teijin.co.jp) – see Plasteurope.com of 08.02.2013 – and is to produce polyphenylene sulfide (PPS). It will be integrated into a larger industrial complex belonging to the South Korean entity.
According to Uhde Inventa-Fischer, one of the reasons its proprietary technology, which includes its "Espree" and "Discage" reactors, was selected for the JV project is that, unlike a conventional batch process, the technology involves a continuous polymerisation process which does not employ any solvents during PPS production.
The 12,000 t/y facility is anticipated to be completed in April 2015.
