SIMONA
Acquisition of the extrusion division of HPG International / Entry into the US market
With its acquisition of the extrusion division of the insolvent HPG International Inc (Mountaintop, Pennsylvania / USA), Germany´s Simona AG (D- 55606 Kirn; www.simona.de), one of Europe´s largest manufacturers of semi-finished plastics products, is gaining its first foothold on the US market. HPG´s extrusion activities are being transferred to the newly-founded Simona America Inc. Production initially will remain at HPG, but the new company plans to have its own production facilities online in 2004. Simona America will be headed by Walter W. Janshen, currently on the managing board at Simona.
In the past, HPG mainly processed polyolefins (some 27,000 t/y of capacity) and PVC into extruded sheet (“Versadur” and “Brigade”) and calendered film. The company, which employs 240, had sales of around USD 54m in 2002. In future, HPG will focus on calendered film, while Simona will continue production of the remaining HPG products and expand the product range. Alongside the flame-retardant materials of CPVC and PVDF, Simona also will sell high-performance E-CTFE and backed sheet for linings and composite construction.
In 2002, Simona, which employs 1,000, attained overall sales of EUR 172.8m; pre-tax profits totalled EUR 12.4 m. Some 55% of its turnover was achieved abroad. Simona operates a joint venture in Ettenheim / Germany with Georg Fischer AG (CH-8201 Schaffhausen; www.georgfischer.com), which manufactures pipes and moulded parts from fluoropolymers.
