Aseptic carton pack made with sustainable materials / Container to be used for first time in European food application
Swiss composite carton specialist SIG Combibloc (Neuhausen; www.sig.biz) said it will supply its 300 ml aseptic carton packs with its Signature Full Barrier sustainable packaging material to the Italian tomato producer cooperative Casalasco Societa Agricola (Rivarolo del Re; www.casalasco.com). The cooperative is said to be the first in Europe to employ the packaging, which is to be used for its Pomi brand tomatoes.

Three raw materials in the Signature Full Barrier packaging material are linked to certified responsible sources via mass balance systems, according to the company. The polymers are fully linked to the forest-based material tall oil, which is a by-product of the paper industry rather than a crop grown on agricultural land that could otherwise be used for producing food, SIG explained.

The paperboard is from FSC certified forests and other controlled sources, the supplier noted, while the ultra-thin layer of aluminum in the packaging material, which protects against light and oxygen, is covered by Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification.
