Agreement for Myriant to deliver biosuccinic acid for PBS production
Securing itself a steady supply of biosuccinic acid, Japan’s Showa Denko (SDK, Tokyo; www.sdk.co.jp) at the end of January 2012 signed an agreement with US biochemicals producer Myriant Corp (Quincy, Massachusetts; www.myriant.com). Financial details of the deal, under the terms of which Myriant will supply SDK with its biosuccinic acid for manufacture of high-performance biodegradable PBS, were not disclosed.

SDK produces two PBS families, trademarked “Bionolle” and “Starcla”, which are used in several products including biodegradable mulch films as well as compostable bags. Welcoming the arrangement, Yasushi Ichikawa, head of SDK’s Bionolle department, said Myriant’s biosuccinic acid would help his company “develop affordable, renewable PBS for our customers around the globe.”
