SGL CARBON
50k carbon fibres for hydrogen pressure tanks
Shortly before the start of international composites trade fair JEC, SGL Carbon (Wiesbaden, Germany; www.sglgroup.com) presented its new 50k carbon fibres (50k corresponds to 50,000 individual filaments) which, according to the company, meet the strength requirements for common pressure tank constructions of classes 2 to 4. The Sigrafil C T50-4.9/235 carbon fibres were developed on the basis of the 50k portfolio, already in large-scale production, which is used in the wind and automotive industries, among others.

According to SGL, the new Sigrafil C T50-4.9/235 heavy-tow rovings achieve a strength of 4.9 GPa and an elongation of 2%. According to the company, these values could previously only be achieved with more expensive strands of lower filament counts such as 12k or 24k.
