New biodegradable resins plant in Malaysia onstream / Capacity expandable to 12,000 t/y
Biodegradable resins producer and packaging group Secos (Melbourne / Australia; www.secosgroup.com.au) has a new facility in Malaysia that is now onstream. The new resins-only plant is located in Telok Panglima Garang, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, and will produce both bioplastic and compostable resins, with an initial capacity of 3,000 t/y.
A spokesman told Plasteurope.com the capacity is expandable to 12,000 t/y in future, and this development makes more sustainable resin available for Secos' existing films plants to supply films for the sustainable hygiene, medical and packaging markets. According to Secos, demand for its resins is growing.
"Cardia Biohybrid" resins are a blend of renewable thermoplastics and traditional polyolefins and "Cardia compostable" resins have been certified to the European standard EN 13432 (compostable packaging). The company said the polyolefins used in its resins is proprietary information. Secos' resins can be used in injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion, film and coating applications. Initial production of its resin had been supplied to local customers and trials of the resin have been fully approved for commercial supply, the company said.
Secos was formed from the merger of Australian companies Cardia Bioplastics and Stellar Films in 2015 – see Plasteurope.com of 27.11.2014. It has a manufacturing plant for resins and finished products in Nanjing, Jiangsu / China, as well as cast films manufacturing facilities in Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur. In Europe, its distribution partners are Plastribution (Ashby / UK; www.plastribution.co.uk) and Marubeni Europe (Düsseldorf / Germany; www.europe.marubeni.com).
