SCHOELLER / WAVIN TREPACK
Merger in plastic transport systems / European market leaders with sales of EUR 175m / 13 company-owned production plants
A spectacular merger came about last week in the highly competitive market for plastic transport containers, such as bottle crates, storage boxes and pallets: The German-Swiss Schoeller Plast Group (HQ: Zugspitzstr. 15, D-82049 Pullach) and Wavin Trepak Holding BV (PO Box 5, NL-7770 AA Hardenberg) founded their new joint venture, Schoeller Wavin Trepak BV. The management comprises the former management of the two companies prior to the merger. Rene Wolfkamp, current managing director of Wavin Trepak, has been appointed CEO.

The new company takes in all the activities of the two partners worldwide, claiming to have created “a strong and innovative company on an international scale”. Schoeller Plast and Wavin Trepak are leaders on the market for plastic transport packaging. Together they own some 500 patents. Their product range covers bottle crates, re-useable transport and storage containers, pallets, industrial buckets, PET trays, caps and injection moulds. The products and customers of the two companies are said to largely complement each other “and expansion will improve on their capacity to fulfil the requirements of national and international customers in an appropriate manner”. The merger constitutes a reaction to current market developments: an increasing number of customers from the beverage industry, the food sector, the chemicals industry and the retail and marketing sectors are working on an increasingly international basis. They are all confronted with rapid further developments in the packaging field. By pooling its resources, the new company is able to respond to this development.

In 1999, Schoeller Wavin Trepak will achieve sales of around EUR 175m. Schoeller is the bigger partner (sales ratio approximately 65:35). The joint venture has some 700 employees and is directly represented in 35 countries worldwide, with 13 production plants of its own in Europe, 13 sales offices and 42 licensees engaged in production.

When questioned by PIE, the company added that the fusion provided a good opportunity for strategic acquisitions in other business fields too for the future, given the new order of magnitude. The joint activities are thus to be expanded still further. On Schoeller / Wavin Trepak see also PIE 02, 1999 (Acquisition of Berolina activities / Resale of plants to Schoeller Plast).
