New plant for PET preforms in Manila / 6,600 bottle capacity can be doubled
German packaging specialist Schmalbach-Lubeca PET Containers (Kaiserswerther Str. 115, D-40880 Ratingen) has continued its expansion into Asia with the opening of a new plant for PET preforms and bottles at Santa Rosa, Metro Manila, in the Philippines. Schmalbach-Lubeca PET Containers Philippines, a joint venture with the local firm Gold Packaging (Union Ajinomoto Buildings, Sen. Gil. Puyat Avenue, Manila), will produce and market preforms for 0.3 and 0.5 litre bottles to supply customers in the country's fast-growing water and non-carbonated beverage industry.
The plant currently has capacities to produce 40m preforms per year and a blowing capacity of 6600 bottles per hour. However, the packaging materials producer said twice this output is possible. This is Schmalbach-Lubeca's second PET container project in Asia. A greenfield joint venture was set up at Pune, India, in 1995. The company claims to be world's largest manufacturer of PET preforms and containers with more than 40 plants and offices in 17 countries of Europe, the US, Latin America and Asia.
