After one year of planning and an investment of about EUR 1m, Samsung Cheil (Uiwang / South Korea; www.samsungchemical.com) in mid-August officially inaugurated its first R&D centre in Europe, located in the industrial park in Frankfurt / Germany. Some 14 scientists will be developing new materials for flat screen TVs and researching new heat-resistant polymers for E&E and water filtration applications at the 350 m2 centre.
The subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate Samsung also operates R&D centres in South Korea, Japan and the US. In locating the newest hub in Frankfurt, Samsung Cheil is striving to be closer to its European customers. Aside from researching new materials, the unit – headed by Dong Soo Lee – will include a laboratory for colour displays.
Samsung Cheil, whose 4,800 employees posted sales of about EUR 3.5 bn in 2011, is the first South Korean company located at Frankfurt’s Höchst industrial park.
