Saudi Arabian petrochemicals giant Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) introduced a high-performance medical-grade unreinforced polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin specifically for injection moulding high-precision parts.
The company said the new polymer was engineered to help manufacturers in the medical and pharmaceutical markets meet a growing need for diabetes management devices (Image: Sabic) |
Applications include as insulin delivery pen components, insulin pumps, auto-injectors, continuous glucose monitors, gears, and other internal components.
Sabic said its Valox HX325HP resin combines good processability with high chemical resistance and validated biocompatibility.
The polymer has predictable processing and performance properties such as high flow in even complex designs, as well as good mould release properties with lower shrinkage variation compared with competing engineering plastics, the company added.

It also delivers high environmental stress cracking resistance and has compatibility with ethylene oxide (EtO), gamma irradiation, and steam sterilisation, Sabic said.
The company noted that the material has been successfully tested against international biocompatibility standards according to ISO 10903 or USP Class VI.
It also said the material can be used as a formaldehyde-free alternative to POM.
