Saudi Arabian chemicals and plastics giant Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) says it has introduced certified circular polycarbonate resin and blends made from post-consumer mixed plastics. The company reports that the materials are an industry first, certified under the ISCC Plus scheme, and based on advanced recycling to deliver up to a 23% reduction in the greenhouse gas footprint compared to the current PC material.
The certified circular PC is part of Sabic’s “Trucircle” portfolio. To make the resins, the company uses a process called pyrolysis that breaks down difficult-to-recycle plastics waste into pyrolysis oil, a feedstock used to create the materials, which are said to have the same properties as virgin material.
OEMs can use the certified materials under identical process conditions to those used for current materials to support their sustainability targets for circular content and carbon footprint reduction (see Plasteurope.com of 09.03.2021).
