SABIC
Partnership with KraussMaffei to advance thin-wall packaging / German skin care maker Beiersdorf adds “Trucircle” to Nivea packaging
Chemicals and plastics giant Sabic (Riyadh/ Saudi Arabia; www.sabic.com) and machinery maker KraussMaffei (KM, Munich/ Germany; www.kraussmaffei.com) have announced a collaboration promoting innovative application, material and processing solutions in thin-wall packaging to be located at the KraussMaffei High Performance subsidiary, formerly Netstal, in Näfels / Switzerland.

The Thin Wall Packaging Application Center in Näfels was expanded as part of the official opening ceremony launching the partnership and will enable closer collaboration between KM, Sabic, customers and third parties to develop material solutions that add value in terms of enhanced mechanical performance, more efficient processability and greater sustainability value, said Abdullah Al-Otaibi, general manager for engineering thermoplastics and petrochemical market solutions at Sabic.

The first new systems installed at the application center by Sabic include equipment designed to investigate injection compression moulding options and test the mechanical properties of thin-wall applications. The application centre houses Netstal injection moulding units and in-mould labelling and part handling technology. Advanced tooling and testing equipment is also on site.

Sabic also announced that German skin care giant Beiersdorf (Hamburg; www.beiersdorf.com) will incorporate its “Trucircle” certified renewable bio-based polypropylene resin into the packaging of its “Nivea Naturally Good” day and night face creams. In March 2021, Sabic announced plans to cooperate with BP on creating a circular economy hub at Gelsenkirchen / Germany to boost the production of certified Trucircle plastics (see Plasteurope.com of 09.03.2021).

US packaging group Berry Global (Evansville, Indiana; www.berryglobal.com) is to produce the jars, which Beiersdorf plans to phase in at point-of-sale outlets worldwide starting June 2021. Switching to the renewable plastic trims CO2 emissions by 76g or 60% for each jar that is produced, Beiersdorf said .

The skin care group is working together with German cleaning products producer Werner & Mertz (Mainz; www.werner-mertz.com) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV, Freising / Germany; www.ivv.fraunhofer.de) on the definition of a recyclate standard for cosmetic packaging since last year (see Plasteurope.com of 29.07.2020).
