PMMA moulding compound offers high-temperature resistance for LED applications
Röhm (Darmstadt / Germany; www.roehm.com) has introduced “Plexiglas Optical HT”, a special heat-resistant moulding compound said to offer “the best possible optical quality” even at high temperatures during continuous use. The material is the latest from Röhm’s PMMA portfolio, and the supplier said it combines optical performance at the “very high level” of “Plexiglas 8N” with the increased heat resistance of the “Heatresist” family.

The grade was developed “specifically for applications with high-performance LEDs,” said product development coordinator Rudiger Carloff. The company reported that the material can withstand temperatures up to 105°C, which is 15°C more than usual, and is also suitable for light guides with longer light paths, which should be of particular interest to the automotive industry.

In addition, Röhm ascribes good weather resistance and longevity to the moulding compound. The new product is said to provide designers with new freedom for creating components such as headlamps and lights.
