"Secure Flip" sports cap closure offers enhanced convenience and safety
RPC Massmould and RPC Astra Plastique, both part of UK packaging group RPC (Rushden; www.rpc-group.com), have launched a type of sports cap that the firms said breaks new ground in convenience and safety. The "Secure Flip" closure comprises an ergonomically designed thumb tab, allowing the cap to be opened with one hand at a full 180o, and making it easy to drink from the spout. An audible click confirms the cap is fully open or re-closed.

According to RPC, the closure can be moulded in the closed position, allowing it to incorporate a patent-protected hinge for a more compact overall design and enhanced aesthetics.
The cap also includes two tamper-evident bands – a Secure Flip band and a "Tuck Under" band. RPC said both parts of the Secure Flip band are retained within the closure, unlike other sports caps with detachable tabs that are either thrown away or often just dropped on the ground. The Tuck Under band on the base of the closure has a series of individual upstands that are revealed when the cap is unscrewed from the bottle. Some of these upstands are pushed outwards when the closure is replaced, showing that the bottle has been opened. RPC added that this band has been designed to aid alignment with capping machinery for optimised efficiency on filling lines.
The closure also includes a three-legged safety device, called "Triskeles", which is incorporated within the mouth of the closure, preventing items being dropped into the drink or small fingers getting stuck in the opening. RPC said Secure Flip can be customised to customer requirements using colours associated with particular brands and products.
