RPC Promens Consumer Nordics, part of RPC (Rushden / UK; www.rpc-group.com), has developed a one litre milk bottle made from a biopolymer produced from sugar cane. The company is presently working technology, believed to be a first in the European market, through which the polymer is mixed with a mineral filler, reducing the amount of polymer required for each bottle without impacting its strength and performance.
In its first commercial application, the “Modul” bottle has been selected by leading Swedish dairy company Skånemejerier (Malmö; www.skanemejerier.com) for its range of non-homogenised milk. Armina Nilsson, sustainability manager at Skånemejerier, said: “Sustainability is a vital consideration throughout all our operations including our packaging, where we always seek to choose a solution with minimal impact on the environment.”
