Twin hinged plastics closure makes adding spice simple

RPC Containers Halstead (Halstead, Essex / UK; www.rpc-halstead.co.uk) has introduced a dual feature cap that allows consumers to spoon or sprinkle their spices. The relaunched packaging for Bart Ingredients’ (Bristol / UK; www.bart-ingredients.co.uk) leading spice range includes the closure that has been developed by Bart following consumer research that found that customers considered the shape of most spice jars awkward.
The resulting closure design, called the “Spoonkler”, features a flip top cap that can be opened in two ways, either to reveal a collection of small holes through which the product can be sprinkled, or a full opening wide enough to fit a teaspoon.
Bart worked with RPC Design and RPC Halstead to produce a closure that could be commercially manufactured and worked reliably on high speed capping lines. RPC said one particular challenge of the design is the opposing side hinges, which enable the closure to be opened in either spoon or sprinkle mode, and RPC Halstead has invested in special manufacturing equipment to enable this to be achieved. The closure is injection moulded in black PP and features a gloss surface finish to maximise on-shelf appeal.
