RIGID FILM MARKET EUROPE
Competitive pressures drive corporate restructuring / Role of private equity grows / AMI report on top 50 producers
The largest European producers of rigid film and sheet are continuing to grow their market share and the role of financial investors is climbing, according to a new 127-page report from Applied Market Information (AMI; Bristol / UK; www.amiplastics.com). The top 50 producers now account for nearly 65% of the total European sheet market, compared with 56% five years ago. AMI estimates that the European thermoplastic rigid film and sheet market reached just over 4m t in 2012, matching the 2008 (pre-recession) level, with over 800 sheet production plants in operation.
Three of the top five companies are owned by private equity groups. The biggest producer in Europe is Klöckner Pentaplast (Montabaur / Germany; www.kpfilms.com), which has been in private equity ownership since 2001, and is currently owned by a group of investors led by US-based Strategic Value Partners (SVP, Greenwich, Connecticut; www.svpglobal.com). In the last twelve years, the company has grown steadily through various acquisitions, including the purchase of MAG Group’s Novopac PVC and PVC/PE sheet business in France, the PP and PS rigid film activities of Italy’s AMB (San Daniele del Fruili; www.ambpackaging.com), and the PET rigid films business of Bemis Packaging Deutschland (Meckenheim / Germany; www.bemis-europe.com).
Right behind Klöckner Pentaplast is Paccor International (Zell / Germany; www.paccor.com), owned by Sun Capital Partners (Boca Raton, Florida / USA; www.suncappart.com). Paccor was created from the acquisitions and subsequent merger of Huhtamaki’s consumer packaging goods business, Veriplast Rigid and Pannunion, making the newly-created company the leading supplier of sheet for form-fill-seal (FFS) applications in Europe.
The other private-equity owned company in the top five is VitasheetGroup (Middlesex / UK; www.vitasheetgroup.co.uk). Owned by Texan TPG Capital (Fort Worth; www.tpg.com) since 2005, the group has focused on improving cost competitiveness and extending its portfolio and sales in Central and Eastern Europe, AMI said.
