Resinex (Arendonk / Belgium; www.resinex.com) has enlarged its distribution portfolio with the addition of Trinseo’s (Europe: Horgen / Switzerland; www.trinseo.com) “Styron 2678 MED” biocompatible polystyrene. The Belgian distributor will handle all sales of the material, approved for use in medical applications, in Europe. The injection moulding grade has been tested according to ISO 10993, and is earmarked for a range of applications including clear rigid packaging, diagnostic components, petri dishes and test kit housings.
Apart from the general characteristics particular to polystyrene, “Styron 2678 MED” also displays properties that make it particularly suitable for use in medical devices. These include chemical resistance to fight infection, the ability to be sterilised by ethylene oxide, and very good radiation stability when subjected to gamma- or e-beam sterilisation, even at high doses. Apart from that, Resinex added that the grade can be processed further, including by means of solvent bonding, welding and laser marking.
