First plastics recycling facility in Wales / June pencilled in for on-spec production of food-grade rPET
Start-up company Plastics Sorting (Pontllanfraith / Wales; www.plasticssortinglimited.co.uk) has opened the first plastics recycling facility in Wales, near Caerphilly. It will initially process 12,000 t/y of PET bottles, before scaling up to its licensed capacity of 24,000 t/y. The plant is expected to be fully operational in June, producing rPET flake for use within the food industry. Initially it will supply two companies in South Wales before increasing its customer base.

Plastics Sorting (PSL) is a collaboration between the private and community sectors. It is partly owned by the Community Recycling Network for Wales (Cardiff / Wales; www.cylch.org) and the social enterprise Cleanstream Group (Cardiff / Wales; www.cleanstreamgroup.com) which also includes plastics recycler Baylis Recycling (St Albans / UK). PSL was the recipient of two grants – totalling GBP 1.3m – from the Welsh Assembly Government to help develop its facility on the 8,300m² site at Blackwood Business Park, nine miles north of Caerphilly.
The PSL facility is currently the largest plastic recycling plant in Wales but Closed Loop Recycling (Dagenham / UK; www.closedlooprecycling.co.uk) has tabled plans for a 50,000 t/y unit at Deeside in North Wales, which it hopes to have operational during 2011.
