RECYCLING
German packaging wastes smuggled to Denmark / DKR may cancel contracts
Despite higher recycling capacities for plastics in Germany and stricter regulations against illegal waste transports, smuggling packaging wastes abroad appears to still be tempting for some. In the latest incidence of "packaging waste tourism", 400-500 t of used plastics from the German national packaging waste collection system, DSD, have turned up in Denmark. DKR Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kunststoffrecycling mbH (Stollwerkstr. 9, D-51149 Köln), the DSD's plastics recycling affiliate, said the wastes, part of a contingent awarded to two recycling consortia, KRS Kunststoffrecycling GmbH + Co KG (Erlagstr. 2, D-85053 Ingolstadtadt) and VerwertungsVerbund Südwest GmbH (Georg-Wörner-Str. 64, D-75015 Bretten), were found at several locations north of the border.
According to DKR, the two consortia subcontracted the materials to plastics converter Beier Industrieprodukte GmbH + Co KG (Panzerstraße, D-52372 Kreuzau) for processing into roofing materials. The recycling guarantee provided by Beier, as foreseen by the German packaging ordinance, apparently was a fake, said DKR managing director Michael Scriba. He said DKR would see that the materials are recycled, at the costs of the parties involved, and indicated that the licences of the two recycling groups to handle materials in DKR's name could be withdrawn.
